The Kimono

Another trend to watch for this spring, leading into summer is the Kimono. We noticed them becoming increasingly popular last summer and look forward to seeing their vibrant colors blowing through the summer breeze again this year!

What some people may not know, is that the Kimono is actually a Japanese tradition. It has only in recent years made it's way into our culture in a more modern way.

When you compare the original Kimono with today's modified version, it's obvious that the original Kimono is much more structured and layered, but the inspiration remains in the floral patterns and the way it hangs on the shoulders.

Take your gorgeous Kimono for a stroll on the beach and let it blow behind you in the wind in all it's flowy, fringy glory.

For the girl who likes a little edge to her girly, don't think you've been left out. This all black ensemble is pulled together in a perfectly grungy way with the help of this dark patterned sheer Kimono.

The Return of the Mom Jean

Well everyone, the time has come to eat our words because "Mom Jeans" are back. Or as mom might say, they're still "super hip." A few years ago, we might have said it was crazy if anyone thought that bringing back over-sized, frumpy distressed looking denim was a smart move in the fashion world. But we have to admit, after witnessing the many ways they can be worn in a modern day sense, we too have become inclined to hop on the "Mom Jean" bandwagon.

With a casual top and sandals

Casual has never looked so on trend. Worn with a loose fitted top and simple leather sandals, your baggy jeans are ready to wear in the streets of Manhattan.

 Layered with booties

This look is slouchy yet completely acceptable to wear out-and-about.

With heels

Who would have thought ripped, baggy jeans would work with a pair of heels? Not us! But after getting an up-close look, we must say, it's actually kind of perfect.

What's in Your Bag?

Us girls have a unique set of things that we consider "necessities". Our own little survival kit, carried on our arm in the form of a gorgeous leather eye-catcher perhaps? Every woman has their power bag that contains everything she needs to get her through the day. Here are some of the goodies we carry with us and some that we think all women should have in arms reach on the daily.

Small makeup bag - Instead of throwing the following list items into the bottom of your bag, we suggest putting the following items in a smaller (preferably zipped) makeup bag.

  • Compact mirror - Avoid having to check your teeth in a stranger's car window.
  • Bobby pins/ hair elastics - No more "does anyone have a bobby pin??" moments.
  • Advil - A headache can put you in a bad mood - lets avoid that.
  • Face powder- It's always nice to freshen up during the day. Oily skin can be avoided, at least temporarily.
  • Lip Balm- An absolute must for all seasons. Protect your lips from the wind, cold, and sun.
  • Mini perfume/ body mist -  For when you need a little sweet scented pick-me-up anytime or any place.
  • Travel size deodorant- We've all forgotten before. Let's not let it happen again.
  • Tampons - Ladies, just do it. And since we are on the subject of tampons, we also suggest putting your tampons in a small, separate bag, (a Ziploc bag would also suffice). No more lone, open tampon swimming along in the bottom of your purse.
  • Band-aids- Blisters on your feet? Band-aids to the rescue.
Healthy snacks - Keep a protein bar or a small bag of almonds in your bag for a quick on-the-go snack.

Ear buds - A necessity for long bus rides, impromptu solo coffee shop dates, and for workout days (how many times have you forgotten?) It's always good to keep a pair on hand.

Phone charger - Not many things scarier than seeing that big red 2% on your screen. Avoid going into full on crisis mode by staying prepared when you need a recharge. Now to find a plug...

Small notebook and pen - sometimes the old fashion way is the quickest for jotting down a number or adding to a grocery list. And unlike your phone, a notepad never dies on you!

Emergency cash - This one is probably the hardest to stick to but we feel that it's a great idea to always have a few dollars on you in case your card fails you or you suddenly need a cab.

Mini pack of tissues - For tragic movies and for those winter days when your nose suddenly turns into a running faucet.

Gum -As a courtesy to others be sure to chew a piece of gum after coffee and meals.

Hand sanitizer - It's not always possible to make it to a sink to wash your hands. We know hand sanitizer isn't the same thing but it will at least hold you over until you can give your hands a good scrub.

What are your favorite things to keep in your bag?

Half up Top Knot

To be totally honest- when we first caught wind of this new hairstyle we weren't sure what to think. It seemed unkempt and scary. However, after seeing half up top knots everywhere in New York we have admittedly fallen in love with this style. We recommend the following tips for executing the perfect look.

Tip #1- The messier, the better. The key to this look is to make it look imperfect. Don't fuss with it too much.

Tip #2- Rock a bold lip color. This hairstyle is a little on the messier side so we suggest pairing it with a bold lip to really pull the look together.

Tip #3- Keep it casual. When it comes to clothing we say keep it simple and let your hair do the talking. Wear your favourite tee or a nice flowy tank with a pair of jeans.

What are your thoughts on this look?

Boho Chic

With it's effortlessly stylish gypsy soul, Bohemian beauty is stealing the lime light this spring. This new and improved Hippie style is a way of expressing a love for rich culture and exotic fashion, while embracing natural beauty. We've witnessed many celebs embracing this trend and it has made it's way to the runway this spring by the name of iconic designers such as Valentino and Vera Wang. We are sure to be guilty of hopping on the Boho bandwagon this season!

Style

The idea of "flower child" at a summer music festival behind the main inspiration of what we see in today's more contemporary Boho.

Flowy shirts and Maxi Skirts for the win.

Hair and Makeup

This isn't typically a bold lip/ slick back bun kind of trend... You're not Taylor Swift going to the Oscars. Try some bronzer with a bit of shimmer and a creamy-champagne colored shadow. You should aim to look almost like you woke up in a desert and just happen to be glowing and beautiful. #iwokeuplikethis

Remember when mom used to tell you to brush that "birds nest" on your head...well mom's still not going to win this battle- let the hair go wild.

Accessories

This is where the magic happens. The key to locking down Bohemian style is by incorporating tons little details that can be brought out through the art of accessorizing. Boho represents a love of culture, so wear the world on your sleeve with embroidered bangles, exotic printed scarves, and layered chains. Keep an eye out for unique pieces whether you're on a tropical vacay or browsing through local markets and boutiques.

Despite the irony of the original "rebel among society" intention behind the trend that has now become a social phenomenon, we can't help but to keep falling in love. But keep in mind that it's not about mimicking. Put your own spin on the trend and customize it to your personality. We look forward to seeing all you Bohemian Beauty's this spring!

Graphic Tee Styling

Graphic tees- a trend that has been quickly taking over the fashion world. With endless options to choose from it's easy to tailor to any personality! Because graphic tees are usually quite bold on their own, it can be hard to figure out what to wear with them. We've come up with some ideas on how to make yours stand out by using these different styling techniques.

Living on the Edge

We could argue that leather and graphic tees go together better than milk and cookies. This impeccably sleek ensemble gives an edge to an innocent look. So throw on a classic motto jacket or dare to go even bolder with some chic leather pants.

For Work

Some women wouldn't consider a graphic tee to be work appropriate. But it's likely just a matter of thinking of it in the wrong way! A blazer goes a long way- it's really the perfect trick to make most any outfit 'work appropriate'. Stay away from denim, as it tends to make an outfit more casual. We do recommend wearing a great heel, and some great jewelry to truly complete a more professional look.

Taking it to the Streets

It's the weekend and you're ready to hit the town. Vamp up your simple graphic tee with a vibrant blazer or plaid top and your favorite distressed denim. This gives an effortlessly cool look.

Feminine

Do not be fooled into thinking that graphic tees are always meant to look tough. Bring out the girly with a patterned skirt, and don't forget to accessorize!

A Guide to Leggings

It's safe to say that leggings have won over the hearts of girls everywhere. There's something irresistible about feeling like your ready for yoga class, while still looking fabulous. We love our cozy leggings just as much as the next girl, but with that said, there are RULES.

*this outfit is just a no. no. no. NO.

Leggings should NOT be worn as pants.  Just as you wouldn't wear tights without something to cover your tush, the same rules apply to leggings. Most of us are guilty of sporting this not-so-cute ensemble at some point, but in reality, it's in everyone's best interest that we we stop this immediately.

With that said, here are some ideas on how to rock your leggings from here on out:

  • Invest in a good pair - Sometimes it's worth spending the extra cash for the extra coverage.                                           Cheaper leggings tend to wear-out easily and can be slightly see-through.
  • Make sure they cover crotch area - Say no to camel toe.
  • Layer with scarves, boots - The more the merrier! A great way to dress up your leggings is with                                             lots of layers. It not only keeps you warm during those chilly days,                                               but it also adds structure and color to your outfit.
  • Different ways to style them - A cute tunic or a long cardi are perfect pieces to work with.                                                         A good rule of thumb to go by is when you straighten your arms                                                   at your sides, your fingertips should not reach past your top.
